Leading with Purpose: How Excelsior Wellness is Building Resilience Amid Funding Challenges

Development

On July 3, the passage of the federal “One Big Beautiful Bill” sent a wave of uncertainty through Washington State as funding reductions threaten critical services.  The legislation is expected to reduce SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits for approximately 1 million Washingtonians, while also introducing new work requirements that could disqualify over 130,000 residents. Simultaneously, an estimated 250,000 Washingtonians are projected to lose or see disruptions in their Medicaid coverage, further straining access to essential healthcare services.

At Excelsior Wellness, we’ve always believed that resilience isn’t just about weathering the storm—it’s about preparing for it. That belief guides our response as we anticipated the ripple effects of these federal changes, particularly their impact on the individuals and families we serve who rely on Medicaid and SNAP to meet basic needs.

“We knew we had to act early, communicate clearly, and stay focused on our mission,” said Andrew Hill, CEO of Excelsior Wellness. “Our priority was to protect the services our community relies on, while honoring the people who make that work possible.”

What Resilience Looks Like

At Excelsior Wellness, resilience means making difficult decisions with compassion and foresight. We took proactive steps to realign our resources, prioritize essential services, and ensure continuity of care for those who depend on us most. By leading with intention, we’ve been able to stay grounded in our mission while adapting to meet the moment.

Support for Employee Transitions

Supporting employees through change is never easy—but it’s where our values matter most.

We approach transitions with empathy, transparency, and a deep respect for the individuals who make our mission possible. Through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), we offer personalized support tailored to each person’s needs.

This approach reflects our belief in dignity, compassion, and continuity of care. We remain committed to walking alongside our team members with the same care we offer our clients.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, we remain committed to serving Spokane with excellence, compassion, and purpose. We’ll continue to plan strategically, advocate boldly, and support our team with the care they deserve.

“I’m proud of how our team comes together—proactively, thoughtfully, and with deep care for one another,” said Hill. “That spirit of collaboration and compassion gives me full confidence in our ability to continue delivering the services our community counts on.”

Let’s keep showing up for each other. Let’s keep building a Spokane where wellness, dignity, and opportunity are within reach for all.
